5:00 pm
air base. we understand there are some 15 homes in the area directly affected by smoke there. again, evacuations are underway. as we keep an eye on this fire fight, we will also keep in mind there is a huge traffic impact here. eastbound interstate 80 is always troublesome at this time of the early evening commute. but, again, if you're heading west, that is not a problem. we have been checking our traffic maps on ktvu the.com. that backup just stretches for miles. if you have a choice, try to avoid that area if you can. let's go ahead and keep taking a look at these live pictures. you spoke with someone on the television, one of our viewers. it is amazing to hear how calm she is, but she was right across the freeway from real trouble. >> reporter: i was just thinking as we watch this fire, and we have been talking about the winds and the, it is a big difference from what we saw 15 minutes ago. we are not getting reports
5:01 pm
directly in the newsroom, but to see visually the fire seems to really be taking a bit of a lay down, which is good news considering the winds we have been tracking and how it looked just 15 minutes ago. >> yeah based on the smoke it looks it has really been isolated to that area next to interstate 80 where a couple homes, perhaps as many as five structures are on fire. this is tape taken just a little bit ago. the house that you are seeing herings it has since continued to burn -- here, it has continued to bunch it almost appears as if the firefighters realized they could not save this house and move on to keep this fire from spreading to neighboring homes. these are live pictures now. that particular house is essentially lost, but the good news, you can see that house right next door. it looks like at least at this point the fire has not spread from that home to the home next door. we saw earlier when we showed
5:02 pm
some wider picture, you could see the fire went right up a hillside, but it appears that they have at least stopped that progress and put out much of those flames. it was burning there on a dry field. there were a lot of homes surrounding that field and it went right up that field. very dry field. bit looks like, w they have pretty much gotten a handle -- bill, they have pretty much gotten handle on it. >> when we were watching this, that was the biggest concern. we had homings then grassland, then wind. when we first saw the grass was on fire, that was very concerning, bit seems like in the last is a, 20 minutes, that has died down great limit as frank points out, we're more isolated to this home. not seeing tree tops burning at this point they are really good at keeping -- look north, you can see the trees not catching fire. the black areas there, the trees, the bushes not really
5:03 pm
catching fire. what was very intense just is a, 20 minutes ago, looks like it has really settled down which is good news. >> bill, if i can ask you. let's talk about all the smoke drifting eastbound off interstate 80. certainly, fairfield is a city where people are directly affected. but if we're talking about air quality, what cities are affected here. who do you think might be impacted? >> you have a west, southwest wind going in the area right now. we will call waist wind. it is blowing it right up the freeway there. westward manes the winds are coming the west and moving east. it's a west wind blowing towards the east. it is called a west wind. it will end unmore in the vacaville area. -- up more in the vacaville area. cordelia is just up the road.
5:04 pm
vacaville and fairfield would be maybe dealing with some smoke from this. >> there has been just a how long response to this fire. again, it's gone to seven alarms from what we understand. strike teams from several counties are also assisting the firefighters here. this home, obviously still on fire, but as we pan back here, it appears that they are getting handle on a lot of this fire. bill, there was some concern when i spoke with someone who was situated across 80 looking at the flames, she was saying that some of the flames were in some of the tree tops. you can see there are a lot of trees there, but it doesn't appear this has turned into what you would call a crown fire. >> yeah. >> where it jumps from tree top to tree top. >> we saw it, too. the flames were reaping high into the sky. it did look like the trees were becoming to be involved. but as we see here, firefighters have done a nice job keeping it out of the trees. in a fire like this, it is one thing have it running down on
5:05 pm
the ground in an area like this, they can stop it on the ground. but when you get up in the trees with wind like this, that fire could really grow. looks as though firefighters have managed to avoid that, the fire or the flames in the treetops. >> bill, as we're watching this, we have a firefighter up on a ladder putting water on the flames. we just got in touch with chp again. we understand all lanes are open but that it is stop and go traffic. very slow, in fact. we sent our own ken wayne out. he is having trouble getting there. he is stuck in the traffic we have been telling you about and showing you. chp says all lanes of 80 are open, but as this live picture here bear out, look on the left hand side of your screen, you can tell it is awfully slow traffic on the eastbound side. take a look at the westbound side. cars heading to the lower left corn of your screen breezing by on open lanes there, but it is a very slow crawl through fairfield on interstate 80 due to this fire and the resulting smoke. that is lasting for hours into
5:06 pm
the backup. >> let's take a moment here, in case you're just joiningtous recap what happened here. probably a little over an hour ago, there was a grass fire. you see the grass there right on the right hand side of the freeway. there was a small grass fire there right on the side of interstate 80, and it jumped the sound wall. there are homes directly behind that sound wall, and the fire quickly spread to some of those homes and some of those trees. then the fire kept on moving up a nearby hill. lots of homes in the area. many of them were threatened. there were evacuations as a result with an evacuation center being set up at a nearby high school. roads have been closed. there is massive fire fighting response here. the fire has gone to seven alarms, but as we look at the pictures here, even though there is substantial damage to at least a couple of homes, it appears that firefighters are making pretty good progress. when you look at this house and
5:07 pm
you see white smoke when it comes to wood burning in a house, white smoke is a good sign bait means that they are getting the frames out -- because it means they are getting the flames out. unfortunately, you can tell by those pictures, the house there is virtually destroyed. >> frank, as we have been reporting there is an evacuation center set up at fairfield high school. eastbound side of interstate 80 not too far from where the fire is. a comfortable, safe distance away. we also would expect that agencies such as the american red cross would also be on site. if nothing more on that assist those families who have lost their homes or at least have been forced from their homes today. again, there are agencies in place and working to help those people directly affected. but when you see a fire like this you really down how the entire neighborhood is affected. certainly, this is the sort of fire situation we have been not reporting on all summer long. we have been saying there hadn't been any major fires in the bay area. this late in the season our first one. >> we eve gotten pretty luck i
5:08 pm
can so far. but, again, this fire seven alarms. a couple homes destroyed. as we mentioned, we have ken wayne heading to the scene. as soon as we gets there and can report new information for us, we will bring it to you. a seven alarm fire, oning right next to interstate 80. developing news from berkeley. news chapper 2 was overhead in berkeley this afternoon as police responded to a construction accident in berkeley that ended up killing a worker. >> happened at martin luther king middle school just two blocks away from mlk way. you have ktvu's paul chambers tells us what students may have seen. he is there now. paul. >> reporter: the body was removed a little over half an hour ago. earlier today they were out here laying turf and asphalt. we can take a look over to the left, this truck was involved in the accident. in that area there where the gentlemen are standing, that's
5:09 pm
